Relax, connect and discover the last haven of untouched African paradise called Kosi Bay.
Your adventure will include:
- 12, 5 km Hiking trail at Kosi Mouth estuary
- Kayaking on the estuary exploring the tidal system;
- Snorkeling in the estuary where you enjoy the underwater wonders of the estuary;
- Visit the traditional Thonga fish kraals, rounded your adventure off with a traditional fish braai with palm wine tasting;
- A 3 lake boat cruise to enjoy the subtropical paradise features, spectacular wildlife, birds and plants, including an informative hike through interesting species of mangrove and palms forest.
ITINERARY
Day 1 – Check-In from 15:00 onwards
- (self-drive to Thobeka Lodge (5hrs from Durban, 8hrs from JHB))
- 19:00 Dinner at the Lapa
Day 2 – 12,5 km hiking trail at Kosi Bay mouth Estuary – 7 Hours
- 7:00 Breakfast at the lapa
- 8:00 Leaving the lodge for the Kosi mouth hiking trail – lunch / snacks will be provided by the tour guide
- 17:00 Return to lodge for nice hot showers
- 19:00 Dinner at the Lapa
Day 3 – Kosi mouth full day excursion – 7 Hours
- 7:00 Breakfast at the lapa
- 8:00 Leaving the lodge for the Kosi mouth full day excursion – lunch / snacks will be provided by the tour guide between activities
- 17:00 Return to lodge for nice hot showers
- 19:00 Dinner at the Lapa
Day 4 – 3 Lake boat cruise and Mangrove Forest Hike – 7 hours
- 7:00 Breakfast at the lapa
- 8:30 Self Drive to Lake 3.
- 9:00 Relaxing 3-Lake Boat cruise and Mangrove Hiking trail starting from 3rd Lake – Lunch will be included
- 17:00 Return to lodge for nice hot showers
- 19:00 Dinner at the Lapa

The Activities explained
12,5 km Hiking trail at the Kosi Mouth Estuary – 7 Hours
Your day will include informative bushwalk exploring the ecosystem of the estuary & surrounds. The Kosi Bay estuary system consists of a series of interconnecting channels and four lakes that flow into the sandy estuary mouth before reaching the Indian Ocean. This subtropical paradise features spectacular wildlife, birds and plants, including interesting species of mangrove and palms. The guide will inform you about the medicinal uses of plants, edible fruit and all the natural material used in their culture.
Kosi Bay mouth Excursion – Full Day
At the estuary you’ll be introduced to a local fish trap owner for the fish kraal activity.
- Visit the traditional Thonga fish kraals – The Thonga fish kraals are found in the Kosi Estuary not far from the mouth. They have been in existence for hundreds of years and are a source of sustenance to the Tembe Tribal people. Age old traditions passed down by generations of tribal existence still continue to this day. The Fish Kraals are made entirely of natural materials, a true old Thonga Tradition that have been in use for the last 700 years! If there is any fish in the traps you’ll get the chance of spearing your own fish for lunch or dinner.
- Kayaking on the estuary exploring the tidal system – After the Fish Kraals you’ll start your kayaking Adventure. You’ll be guided pass mangrove forests, fish traps and lots of bird life, whilst your guide will be telling you all about Thongaland. You will be mind-blown by the serenity and natural beauty of the Kosi Estuary!
- Back to shore and time to explore the wonders of the Aquarium! Snorkeling in the estuary where you enjoy the underwater wonders of the estuary – Snorkel one of the most diverse reefs in SA, the ‘Aquarium’ with an experienced Marine Guide. On average we see about 80 to 100 different species of fish. Snorkeling in this well-known area is an incredible experience!
- Rounded your day off with a traditional fish braai with palm wine tasting – Experience the amazing culture of the peaceful Thonga people! After a last swim in the ocean, you will start with a slow walk back to your vehicle.
3 Lake Boat cruise & Mangrove hiking trail – 7 hours
- During the 3 lake boat cruise you will enjoy the subtropical paradise features, spectacular wildlife, birds and plants, including interesting species of mangrove and palms. You will cruise through reed channels offering an opportunity to snorkel along the Mangrove banks and hike through the Mangrove forest. The Mangrove forest and Sycamore fig forests provides habitat for approximately over 300 bird species. Mangroves protects shoreline from damaging storms and hurricane winds, waves and floods. Lunch Included. (7 hours)

This unit is fitted with a double bed and single bed, on-suite shower and toilet.
The following are being supplied:

The kitchen is stocked with pots, pans and crockery, fridge/freezer, microwave, and 2 plate gas stove. An outside table and chairs and braai facilities are available. Indoor dining is available at the Lapa.
Wood and charcoal for braai/barbeque is not supplied. Guests must make provision for themselves.
2 x Double room, on-suite bathroom – 2 people sharing
This unit is fitted with a double bed and bunk bed, on-suite shower and toilet.
The following are being supplied:
- linen
- gas geyser for hot water
- mosquito nets
- fan
The kitchen is shared between the double rooms, and is stocked with pots, pans and crockery, fridge/freezer, microwave, 2 plate gas stove. An outside table and chairs and braai facilities are available. Indoor dining is available at the Lapa.
Wood and charcoal for braai/barbeque is not supplied. Guests must make provision for themselves.
2 x Tented Units, on-suite shower and toilet – 2 people sharing / per person
This unit is fitted with two single beds, on-suite shower and toilet.
The following are being supplied:
- linen
- gas geyser for hot water
- mosquito nets
- fan
A communal kitchen is available for use, which is stocked with pots, pans and crockery, fridges and freezer, microwave, 2 plate gas stoves. An outside table and chairs and braai facilities are available. Indoor dining is available at the Lapa.

Large Family Unit with private shower and toilet – 3 to 5 people sharing
This unit is fitted with two double beds and a bunker bed, on-suite shower, bath and toilet.
The following are being supplied:

A communal kitchen is available for use, which is stocked with pots, pans and crockery, fridges and freezer, microwave, 2 plate gas stoves
An outside table and chairs and braai facilities are available at the Lapa. Indoor dining is also available at the Lapa.

A non-refundable deposit of 50 % is required within 48 hours of making the booking to secure the reservation for accommodation and activities. All outstanding fees must be paid within 30 days before the day of arrival, or as arranged prior to arrival.
Terms and Conditions
- The package is quoted in ZA Rand and is subject to change without notice until full payment is received.
- Late arrivals, early departures, No show or cancellation less than 30 days prior arrival – No refund due.
- For bookings made less than 30 days prior to stay, full payment must be received within 48 hours where after organisers will confirm your reservations.
- Once a reservation is confirmed, please notify us by sms, phone call or email of any cancellation or modification of the booking at least 14 days before arrival.
- No exceptions for late arrivals or early departures.
- No-shows forfeit all privileges.
- Check-in: 14:00 – 23:00; checkout: 10:00.
- All bookings are subject to the terms and conditions and conduct rules of the service providers concerned.
- Organisers shall not be liable to any guest for any injury, loss, accident, delay caused by any act, omission or incident whatsoever involving the resort, lodge or operator/tour guide concerned.
- By confirming and paying for your reservation, it is understood that you have read and accepted our terms and conditions.

- The organisers acts as agents for the numerous suppliers of activities on the itineraries and does not take responsibility for changes to the respective service provider’s offerings.

Parking is available at the Lodge premises free of charge.
Indemnity
Thobeka Lodge and its staff accepts no responsibility for any injury, illness, death, loss or damage to self or others, occurring during or arising from a visit or visit to reserves, parks, resorts, activities, excursions however caused and whether allegedly due to the negligence of the company or any agent arising from the use of any facilities supplied or made available. However, we pledge to do all necessary steps to keep each and every one safe.
