About the 3 Lake Boat Cruise

The Kosi Lake system is made up of four lakes – Makhawulani,  Mpungwini , KuNhlange and Amanzamnyamal – connected via channels which drain via a sandy estuary into the Indian Ocean. The best way to experience three of the four Kosi lakes is by boat where you will float between the famous fish traps of the traditional Thonga that trap fish moving in and out of the estuary with the tide.  Enjoy a snorkel off the boat in the protected mangroves and view a variety of fish life. Snorkeling gear is included in the price of the boat trip.

View the incredible diversity of birds which inhabit this pristine environment such as the African fish eagle, the Pels fishing owl, flamingos, herons and kingfishers.  Hippos, crocodiles and flamingos may also be seen from the boat.

Types of 3 Lake Boat Cruises Available

    • Mornings starts at 9 am
    • Afternoon starts at 2 pm
    • Full day cruises are also available – see the 3 lakes, cross third lake to Banga Nek, take a short walk through the forested coastal dunes to the beach. Spend time relaxing at the beach and come back to the boat for return trip.
    • Or combine the 3 lake boat cruise with a hike in the Rafia Palm Forest. This forest is considered as the largest palm trees in the world, home to the Palm-nut Vulture. An absolute recommendation for birder lovers.

Where to Find the Boat

The  boat start at the launching site in 3rd Lake, with a quick briefing done by one of the skippers, where the boat will head towards the winding channel. At the entrance to the channel you will see fish kraals with Comorants and Terns in season. Be on the lookout for the Fish Eagles as they occasionally will help itself to a fish from the kraal.

What you will Experience

Cruising through the channel you should be able to see the fish swimming below or against the sides of the channel if the water is clear. For the bird lovers you can spot the Pied Kingfisher or Giant Kingfisher, Goliath Heron, Purple Heron, Grey Heron and many Comorants.  If you look closely in the reeds or on the and along the channel, you might find a water monitor lizard basking in the sun.

Once through the channel and through 2nd lake look out for all the traditional Thonga Fish Kraals. These are mostly made using the Tsonga or Kosi Mangrove. The skipper will take you to see the resident hippos and if possible the flamingos. The hippos are mostly calm unless disturbed or protecting their young.

Between 1st lake and 2nd lake in the False channel under the mangroves there is a great opportunity to snorkel and see the schools of breeding Natal Moonies and sometimes even some big Rock Salmon. Get as close to the Mangrove trees as possible and soon you will be surrounded by fish.

Kosi Bay is on of the few places where all 6 species of Mangrove Trees occur naturally.
