Experience the Incredible Tembe Elephant Park | Big Five Safari Near Kosi Bay
Tembe Elephant Park is most widely known for having over 200 of the world’s largest Elephants, which are also the last remaining indigenous herd in KwaZulu-Natal and includes the legendary big “Tuskers.” (Tuskers are elephants whose enormous tusks weigh more than 45kgs)!
Tembe is comprised of 30,000 hectares of land which was historically owned by the Tembe tribe – the ancestral custodians of the area. Nkosi (Chief) Mzimba Tembe donated the land for the formation of this Game Reserve, and it is still owned by the Tembe tribe community, while its precious bio-diversity is managed by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife; the KwaZulu-Natal conservation service.
Game Drives
Your guides know the elephants and the elephants know the guides. The elephants are relaxed around the game drive vehicles, offering you unforgettable encounters with these gentle grey giants.
Tembe is home to an abundance of wildlife – including the Big Five.
Black and white rhino, buffalo, leopard, hippo, serval, eland, zebra, giraffe, hyena, jackal, wildebeest, nyala, kudu, waterbuck, reed buck, red duiker, warthog, and other small mammals thrive in abundance.
Mahlasela Water Hide
The Mahlasela Hide at Tembe Elephant Park is a premier game-viewing structure overlooking a large, artificially pumped waterhole. Located in the remote sand forest region of KwaZulu-Natal, it provides an intimate, safe vantage point to observe large herds of Southern Africa’s famous “tuskers” and other wildlife as they drink and bath.
Birdlife
Tembe Elephant Park is a bird lovers paradise, home to over 340 recorded species. Its unique blend of closed-canopy sand forest, woodlands, and swampland supports localized residents, South African endemics, and tropical species at the absolute southern limit of their range.
The park’s birdlife is diverse, ranging from large raptors to rare, highly sought-after specials. Key highlights to look out for include:
Sand Forest Specials: The dense canopies are prime territory for the threatened Plain-backed Sunbird, Neergaard’s sunbird, Pink-throated twinspot, Rudd’s apalis, and Woodward’s batis.
Woodland & Grassland Species: Look for the African broadbill, Gorgeous bush-shrike, Lemon-breasted canary, Chestnut-fronted helmet-shrike, and Rosy-throated longclaw.
Nocturnal & Water Birds: Spot the Swamp nightjar, Rufous-bellied heron, and Black coucal.
More common sightings around the park and camp include the Southern crested guineafowl, Purple-crested turaco, and various hornbills.
While the park is a birder’s paradise year-round, the absolute best time for birding is from November to April, when Palearctic and intra-African migrants arrive. Birding is best done via early morning guided walks or game drives.
